Celebrate the Peak of the
Season in Castroville

It's spring again, and that means we're in prime-growing season in the capital of Artichokes: Castroville, Calif. From April to May, Castroville comes alive as the Green Globe Artichoke crop is harvested, and this year is no different. If you're wondering how to celebrate the Artichoke season, get in on the fun at Castroville's famous Artichoke Festival May 15 and 16.

The finalists for the 2010 Artichoke festival king and queen have been selected and they need YOUR votes. The king and queen will each win a college scholarship and could star in his or her very own television campaign. The winners will be announced on May 15 at 2 p.m. at the Castroville Artichoke Festival.

Artichoke Festival Facts
Did you know that Norma Jean, also known as Marilyn Monroe, was crowned the first ever California Artichoke Queen Sept. 20, 1948? Other interesting Artichoke festival facts include:
  • At the 1959 festival, you could buy a barbeque chicken meal, including Artichokes, for 75 cents.
  • The approximate festival attendance in 1962 was 1,200. In 2009, it was 30,000.
  • There were 21,168 Artichokes sold in just two days at the festival's farmers' market in 2009!
