It’s no secret that today people are trying to save money. From cutting back on luxuries like vacations to using more coupons during the weekly grocery store trip, penny pinching has become part of a widespread trend. Even a simple weekly happy hour or dinner out with friends can add up to big bucks. If you’re looking for ways to save money, but still want to spend quality time with friends, why not consider organizing a potluck?

Potlucks can be the perfect party option for those who are looking for less-stressful ways to spend time with friends and family.

1. Get Organized – The first step to planning a great potluck is picking a date and time and letting people know. You may also consider a theme for the night that guests should keep in mind when bringing dishes to share. Some great themes include “Dishes from Around the World,” “Mexican Fiesta” and “Family Favorites.” Keep in mind as a potluck host you have the freedom to delegate as many tasks as you’d like, so don’t hesitate to get people involved. The best potlucks are the ones that include small touches from everyone in attendance. Also, make sure you don’t have too many of the same item by providing guests with a suggested list of needed items, including appetizers, entrees and desserts, and then ask each guest to select one item, reassigning when necessary. Someone should also be in charge of bringing the beverages.

2. Provide “Social” Dishes – Potlucks are all about getting people together to enjoy good food in a low-key atmosphere, and as a potluck host, you have the freedom to offer foods that are delicious and interesting. Some easy ways to do this is by serving foods that will spark conversation like a mashed potato bar with different topping choices or something simple like do-it-yourself chocolate-covered strawberries. Artichokes are also a great option and are sure to get people talking. Not only are they healthful and tasty, but also the perfect social food, as they provide a hands-on eating experience. Try picking a number of different Artichoke recipes and getting your guests involved by asking them to help prepare the Artichokes for cooking, including trimming the stems and leaves. If you’d rather do things ahead of time, prep your Artichoke the night before and throw them on the grill for the perfect summertime treat that can be served with tasty dipping sauces. Some great grilled Artichoke recipes include our Easy Grilled Artichokes and Grilled Artichoke with Lemon.

3. Decorate for Less – Carry your theme over into your decorations. Keep things simple and inexpensive by using colorful candles and bouquets of fresh flowers. Another money-saving option is reusing decorations you have lying around from Halloween, Valentine’s Day or a recent birthday party.

4. Stock Supplies – Your guests are definitely going to need plates and utensils to eat with, so be sure to have some on hand. You can bulk up on these items without breaking the bank by stocking up at your local dollar store. You can also ask guests who are bringing smaller side dishes or dessert to chip in and bring supplies. Other essential supplies should include take-home containers and storage items so you won’t be stuck finding a place in your kitchen for all the leftovers.
