April begins the peak of Castroville’s prime growing season and Ocean Mist Farms' most abundant time of the year. This month, as we prepare for the 49th annual Castroville Artichoke Festival, our Artichoke plants are in full bloom, producing bigger, tastier and meatier Artichokes than ever. And, since April 22 is also Earth Day – dedicated to bringing people together to celebrate environmental awareness – it’s a good time to tell you about how we harvest the healthy veggie, as well as our certified organic Artichokes.
Ocean Mist Farms' Artichokes are not mass-produced, but instead planted, cultivated and hand picked by skilled harvesters. Our Artichokes typically grow for about six months before teams of up to 52 harvesters walk through the fields and cut the vegetable from the perennial plants, carrying them in backpacks called canastas. During the prime growing season, one harvester can pick about 3,200 individual Artichokes! That’s why we hire some 500 additional Artichoke harvesters and packers to help handle the large quantities of Artichokes picked during this time of year.
In addition to focusing on growing our traditional Artichokes, Ocean Mist Farms is also dedicated to providing Artichokes that keep the preservation of natural resources in mind. In 2001, Ocean Mist Farms began growing high-quality organic Globe Artichokes on more than 350 acres of land. Today, we continue to grow our Globe Artichokes in acreage that is naturally high in fertility. We also abide by the organic growing standards put in place by the United States Department of Agriculture and the California Department of Agriculture. At Ocean Mist Farms, we continue to strive for sustainable growing and harvesting processes that ensure the production of tasty and healthful Artichokes for years to come.
