Five Tips to Plan the Perfect Father's Day Picnic

Father’s Day is just around the corner, and people across the country are trying to come up with creative and fun ways to treat the special dads in their lives. If you have the dad who has everything, the husband who loves less-traditional gifts or would rather do something surprising this year, why not get outside and have a picnic?

First celebrated in 1908, Father’s Day began as a commemoration following a deadly explosion in West Virginia.  The holiday has since shed its dreary roots and become a day to celebrate and thank fathers and father figures for their hard work throughout the year.

Many people today celebrate with traditional gifts like ties and watches or fancy dinners, but may have overlooked picnics as an enjoyable alternative to the typical Father’s Day meal.  Picnics offer a great way to enjoy the outdoors, while spending time with loved ones.  Plus, they are affordable and customizable to the likes of any dad, and are an easy way to get the kids involved in the planning process.

If you’re thinking of hosting a picnic to pamper your pop, husband or another special father figure this year, keep the following tips in mind:

  1. Plan ahead.  The most difficult part of planning a picnic is remembering to bring everything.  Make a checklist the night before that includes all needed food items, condiments and utensils.  It might not be a bad idea to also add other essentials like sun block, a blanket and trash bags for cleaning up.
  2. Think simple.  The most successful picnics include food that is quick to prepare and easy to store.  Always make sure perishable food is kept in a cooler that is full of ice and stored in the shade.  Wondering what to bring?  Try our Artichoke Tomato Salsa as a delicious picnic dip.
  3. Decorate.  Did you know roses are the official flower of Father’s Day?  Using items like flowers and even confetti can add a special touch to any picnic and help set the celebratory mood for your dad.  Don’t forget to bring a card!
  4. Bring dessert.  What Father’s Day celebration would be complete without a sweet treat?  Decorate sugar cookies with frosting the night before and balance out the calories with healthy additions like fresh fruit.  Your guests are sure to enjoy your creativity!
  5. Have fun.  Picnics are great because they are low-stress and require little clean up.  Less mess means you’ll have more free time to spend with loved ones!
