Get Outside and Get Grillin’ – Six Summer Barbeque Tips

Things are heating up with the arrival of summer. Not only is the warmer weather getting people outside, but many people are also dusting off their grills and aprons, and getting ready for barbeque get-togethers. While most barbeques focus on foods such as burgers and hot dogs, adding items like Artichokes and other healthier choices can help spice up your grilling menu.

Throwing fruits and veggies on the grill is an easy way to add variety to barbeques, while offering guests a good source of needed nutrients. Plus, they add a unique addition to side dishes like salads and even desserts. Wondering what to grill? The following tips will provide simple grilling guidelines for some tasty fruits and veggies:

1. Artichokes – While steaming is the most common way to cook an Artichoke, grilling them is a great way to add some additional flavor. Plus, grilled Artichoke Hearts can be easily added to pasta and fresh green salads. Simply cook Artichokes by your preferred method, drizzle with olive oil and place on the grill until charred. Try our recipe for Grilled Artichokes with Spicy Aioli, which uses balsamic vinaigrette as a pre-grilling marinade.

2. Asparagus – Try grilling Asparagus for a low-calorie side dish. After preparing the veggie, brush with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper or garlic salt. Grill over high heat for about two to three minutes and enjoy!

3. Romaine Hearts – If you’re planning on making a summer salad, try grilling your Romaine Hearts first for added taste and crisp. Slice Romaine Hearts in half and grill facedown for about two minutes before chopping.

4. Bananas – Looking for a new dessert? Grill some bananas. Place a skewer through a banana and place on the grill with the skin on until browned. Once it’s done cooking, scoop out the warmed fruit and serve over ice cream.

5. Apples and pineapples – Serving grilled fruit on its own is also a great way to add some variety to your cookout. When grilling apples, be sure to pick firm fruit that is almost ripe. Start by soaking applies in a water and lemon or cinnamon mixture before grilling. Then, cut in half, scoop out the seeds and grill until soft. Pineapples are also perfect for the grill and can be easily paired with meats. Plus, grilling caramelizes the fruit’s natural sugars, so there is no need to add any additional flavors.

6. Cherries and lemons - What barbeque would be complete without the perfect, refreshing summer drink? Try grilling cherries and lemons before adding them to iced tea or your favorite cocktail.
