Three Ways Artichokes Can Help Your Health

Did you know that Artichokes are not only delicious, but also chock-full of healthful nutrients and disease-fighting vitamins? With more than 44 million Americans today suffering from obesity, according to the Centers for Disease Control, and many people dealing with other ailments such as diabetes and heart disease, Artichokes can provide an easy and tasty way to eat healthier and help improve health.

Artichokes can help kick-start anyone’s goal of overall healthier living. According to the USDA Dietary Guidelines – released in April 2005 – Artichokes encompass many of the recommendations by the government’s science-based advice. What’s more, four of the key nutrients most people need more of in their diets can be found in Artichokes – fiber, magnesium, vitamin C and potassium!

The following health benefits are the top three ways Artichokes help meet the USDA’s Dietary Guidelines:

1. Recommendation: Based on a 2,000-calorie diet, adults should increase the amount of vegetables included in the diet, aiming for at least two-and-one-half cups per day.
How Artichokes Help: Since Artichokes are a vegetable that is fun, easy and tasty, they are the perfect choice for adding more greens to the diet. They are also full of disease-fighting antioxidants and folate. In fact, Artichokes were the top ranked fresh vegetable tested — beating out such nutritional powerhouses as Broccoli and Spinach.

2. Recommendation: Include fiber-rich fruits, vegetables and whole grains often.
How Artichokes Help: There are 10.3 grams of dietary fiber in one medium Artichoke and according to the American Dietetic Association, adults should consume between 20 to 35 grams of fiber per day. By eating one Artichoke, you will be getting nearly half of the recommended amount of fiber into your diet!

3. Recommendation: Help reduce saturated fat and cholesterol intake by replacing animal-based protein with more plant-based protein.
