Ocean Mist Farms Completes First Employee Leadership Development Program
Innovative program focused on developing staff from within
CASTROVILLE, Calif. – (Nov. 21, 2011) – Ocean Mist Farms celebrated the completion of its inaugural leadership development program with a graduation ceremony Nov. 19 for Class I participants of the program designed to develop the company’s emerging leaders from within.
Conceptualized, designed, and implemented over several years, the leadership development program included curriculum that included topics such as self-awareness, organizational behavior, team building, change management, and strategic planning among others.
Jorge Suarez, director of human resources, said, “The six employees in the Class I program invested more than 165 hours of classroom field and experiential time over a year and half, read 10 books and benefitted from 20 different presentations from experts in their fields – both in and out of the company.”
“The program curriculum educated the participants about the entire Ocean Mist Farms process from seed to sales,” Suarez said, and then moved on to broader program topics that included areas such as business acumen and principles of leadership.
“This program is about developing key human capital at Ocean Mist Farms,” Suarez said. “We identified the employees with the potential to grow our business and we invested in them as part of our company’s future.”

Bobbielynn Galvan named president of Coachella Valley Chapter
CASTROVILLE, Calif. -(Oct. 25, 2011) – Bobbielynn Galvan is the new president of the Coachella Valley Chapter of California Women for Agriculture. Galvan is office manager at Ocean Mist Farms office in Coachella California.
“This is a great organization that was started in Coachella Valley that supports educates and promotes our industry to the public,” said Jeff Percy, VP of Production-Coachella Ocean Mist Farms. “Bobbie has a lot of great ideas and has worked very hard these last couple of years for the organization and capped it off by being elected president.”
Galvan has been with Ocean Mist Farms since 2007 and involved with California Women for Agriculture for two years.

Ocean Mist Farms To Debut Microwaveable Bag At PMA Fresh Summit
New technology recognized for innovation by PMA
CASTROVILLE, Calif. - ( Sept. 19 2011) - Ocean Mist Farms is featuring a new item at this year’s PMA Fresh Summit in Atlanta, the first of its kind “Season & Steam” microwavable artichoke bag.

Chef Baker and Ocean Mist Farms will serve a menu featuring sustainable ingredients such as ocean-friendly seafood and humanely raised pork. Booth visitors on Saturday can sample bay shrimp artichoke and avocado ceviche with Ocean Mist cilantro and green onions and smoked chili tortillas served on a fresh artichoke petal and artichoke risotto made with Baker’s bacon. Sunday’s menu will feature Artisanal chicken artichoke sausage with spicy fennel slaw and an artichoke sourdough bisque with green onion infused oil.
Ocean Mist Farms will also have compost receptacles in the booth, making it easy to recycle/compost the earth-friendly plates, water cups, napkins, and eating utensils used as part of the menu sampling.
“We create a good deal of waste on a daily basis in our booth during Fresh Summit so we use the same recycling practices that we do at our company headquarters in Castroville,” Tuggle said. “We feel good about making it easy for our booth visitors to reduce-reuse-recycle.”

Company to help celebrate fair's 75th anniversary with multiple activities
CASTROVILLE, Calif. – (Aug. 23, 2011) – Artichoke tastings, short cooking demonstrations, recipe sharing, and a produce stand are all part of the featured activities planned for Ocean Mist Farms Day at the Monterey County Fair on Friday, Sept. 2, in the Ag Building.
From noon to 5 p.m. the company will be serving Artichoke Sourdough Bisque with Garlic Bread Sticks, Spinach Salad with Apple Smoked bacon, and Pecorino Romano Cheese tossed in a Creamy Balsamic Vinaigrette, and long-time fair favorite, fried artichokes, all recipes are available at www.oceanmist.com.
While enjoying artichokes, fair goers will have the opportunity to become an Artichoke Aficionado club member.
Ocean Mist Farms will also enter its entire product line of fresh vegetables, including artichokes for judging against other locally grown produce. Monterey County Chef Tony Baker Wins Top-Chef Style Cook-Off
Winning recipe features locally-grown Ocean Mist Farms artichokes
CASTROVILLE, Calif. -(Aug. 1, 2011) – Chef Tony Baker, executive chef and co-owner of Montrio Bistro in Monterey, Calif., was the winner of a “Top Chef” style cook-off July 29 at the Produce Marketing Association’s annual foodservice conference in Monterey.
Baker demonstrated the preparation of Smoked Artichoke-Spinach and Goat Cheese Crepes with Scrambled Eggs and Mustard Cream and was entered into the competition for the “Best Tasting Menu Item” contest in the breakfast category.
The judging criteria for the contest included appearance, aroma, taste, quality indicators, produce-centricity, and innovation.
The conference attendees chose the winning recipe and all participating chefs’ recipes will be included in a recipe booklet.
This is the second time that Baker has been honored by the produce industry. In 2008, he received the first annual 2008 Produce Excellence in Foodservice Award from United Fresh Research & Education Foundation at its annual conference United Fresh. Baker was one of five outstanding chefs recognized for the use of produce in the culinary arts.
“At Montrio Bistro we work closely with farmers to get the very best of the season,” Baker said. “Living and working on the Monterey Peninsula makes it easier; we are fortunate to have a plethora of farmers offering us their produce that our customers appreciate.”
The menu at Montrio Bistro features locally grown produce such as Ocean Mist Farms artichokes. Baker has worked with Ocean Mist Farms on recipe development and other ideas for more than 10 years.

Ocean Mist Farms Completes Expansion of Mexico Facility
Upgrades to processing plant doubles capacity
CASTROVILLE, Calif. – (July 25, 2011) – Ocean Mist Farms completed the upgrade and expansion of its Baja Mist production facility in order to increase Mexico-grown product offerings the company celebrated the opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony May 23 at the facility located in the Mexicali Valley of Mexico.
By expanding the size, the plant has doubled the capacity to process and ship all Ocean Mist commodities grown in Mexico including iceless green onions, Brussels sprouts, leeks, and radishes.
“The facility mirrors the companys U.S. operations from a processing and food safety standpoint,” said Ocean Mist Farms Vice President of Production Troy Boutonnet.
Prior to the expansion, the Ocean Mist Farms facility in Mexico was at capacity. In the latest 26-weeks ending March 26, dollar and volume sales of the green onion category increased more than 9 percent nationally compared to the prior year (Source: Perishables Group FreshFacts).
“We are now poised to meet growing customer demand for green onions and Brussels sprouts,” Boutonnet said.
“Ocean Mist Farms developed the state of the art cooler and process design after years of observing processing facilities in and out of the produce sector, including Coca-Cola Mexico leading to design innovations that address product quality, shelf life, food safety, employee comfort in the work environment, and security,” Boutonnet said.
“The upgraded design of our plant in Mexico exceeds the current industry standards for product risk management,” Boutonnet said. “We want this facility to be a showcase for all green onion producers regardless of the location.”

Chef Tony Baker to participate in Top Chef style food demo
CASTROVILLE, Calif. – (July 15, 2011) – Ocean Mist Farms will host an artichoke field tour as part of PMA’s Fresh Produce Academy at the annual foodservice conference in Monterey, Calif.
The field tour on Friday, July 29, includes a visit to a beach-side artichoke field, company headquarters and a cooling facility, and a cooking demonstration by Chef Tony Baker of Montrio Bistro, Monterey, Calif.

Christopher Drew among Produce Business 40 Under Forty
CASTROVILLE, Calif. – (June 22, 2011) – Chris Drew, Production Manager for Ocean Mist Farms, was nominated by industry peers as one of Produce Business magazine 40 Under Forty.
The seventh annual award recognizes young leaders who excel in community involvement and other company and produce industry accomplishments.
Drew manages the production of artichokes, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, celery, cardone, fennel, head lettuce, mix lettuces, romaine, romaine hearts, and spinach on more than 5,000 acres.
In the past five years, Drew has taken on several key roles of importance to Ocean Mist Farms and the industry including chair of the Ocean Mist Farms Integrated Pest Management Team, member of the Agriculture Water Advisory Committee for Monterey County, member of the California Artichoke Advisory Board, and panel member of the pilot program for the Sure Harvest Sustainability Index for specialty crops.
Drew is also a current member of the Ocean Mist Farms Employee Leadership Development Program (a two year program).
“I am grateful that the industry recognizes the efforts that the Ocean Mist Farms Production Team is making as a leading grower shipper of safe, quality, artichokes, and fresh vegetables from the farm,” Drew said.
Drew has worked with Ocean Mist Farms since 2004, and is a graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a bachelor degree in crop science.

Wisconsin Woman Wins $10,000 in Artichoke Sweepstakes
Ocean Mist Farms announces spring promotion sweepstakes winner
CASTROVILLE, Calif. – (June 16, 2011) – Linda Custard of Superior, Wisc. has never loved artichokes more. Custard won $10,000 in Ocean Mist Farms spring promotion the “Easy to make. Easy to win.” sweepstakes.
In addition to Custards cash prize, she and 60 other sweepstakes participants received a case of field fresh artichokes delivered to their home.
“I was absolutely blown away when I won,” Custard said. “And the case of artichokes was a fantastic centerpiece to my family’s Memorial Day celebration. We grilled them and tried a bunch of new recipes.”
Custard said she buys fresh artichokes at Super One Foods or Walmart in Superior Wisc.
Ocean Mist Farms’ first-ever consumer sweepstakes ran for six weeks during the peak of spring artichoke season. During that period, shoppers were directed to Ocean Mist Farms’ new mobile site, m.oceanmist.com where they could enter to win a grand prize of $10,000. To qualify, consumers had to provide an email address and become an Artichoke Aficionados club member.

The 15-second video advertisement tells viewers that the spring artichoke season is here and they can find artichokes on sale at nearby Food Emporium locations in New York City. It also provides a link to Oceanmist.com for artichoke instructional videos.
“With 1.5 million people walking through the Times Square neighborhood every day, the Jumbotron video was a new and wide-reaching way to announce the arrival of spring artichoke season,” said Kori Tuggle, director of marketing and business development.

CASTROVILLE, Calif. – (April 4, 2011) – Ocean Mist Farms added a promotional page to its website for the 2011 peak artichoke season that allows shoppers to find artichokes on sale in their markets.
The “Where to Find Artichokes on Sale,” webpage, first posted March 1, is being updated weekly throughout the spring artichoke season in Castroville, Calif.
Artichoke shoppers are alerted via Ocean Mist Farms’ posts on Facebook, Twitter, and by email to Artichoke Club members.
Consumers can go to the webpage, choose the region of the country where they live, and see artichoke promotions listed by retailers specific to their location.
“It is an exclusive service that supports retailers’ ads and consumers asking where they can find artichokes now,” said Kori Tuggle, director of marketing and business development.
“We know shoppers are looking for value and we want to use every tool we have to communicate with them when our retail partners are promoting artichokes,” Tuggle said. “This is another vehicle that creates dialogue with our consumers. Retailers active on social media outlets also pick up our posts and share the artichoke sale prices with their engaged consumers.”
The “artichokes on sale” page allows Ocean Mist Farms to deliver all retail promotions directly to the artichoke shopper target market.

Adrian Zendejas named agriculturist of the year
CASTROVILLE, Calif. – (March 25, 2011) – The Coachella Valley Chapter of California Women for Agriculture has named Adrian Zendejas agriculturist of the year.
Zendejas is general manager of Desert Mist Farms in Coachella, Calif., the southern California desert farming company of Ocean Mist Farms.
Zendejas will be honored at a dinner celebrating National Agriculture Week along with 20 scholarships students.
A former CWA scholarship winner himself, Zendejas was born and raised in the Coachella Valley by parents who worked in the valley’s agriculture industry.
“I grew up in this industry. It was tough work but I loved outdoors and the satisfaction of doing that means something,” Zendejas said.
Zendejas recently described “the secret” to his day-to-day job responsibilities to a local newspaper as, “Just hard work really! And a phenomenal team. Thorough ground preparation. And irrigation – water timing to make sure the crops survive the heat. It is a seven day a week job but its very gratifying to see from start to finish what you’ve accomplished,” he said. “It’s like being in a garden every day of the year; you can’t beat it.”
Zendejas has been with Ocean Mist Farms since 1997. Today he manages the year round farming program at Desert Mist where the branch of Ocean Mist Farms is just finishing its winter season of more than 30 fresh vegetable commodities such as lettuce, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, and artichokes.

Ocean Mist Farms Launches New Mobile Site

CASTROVILLE, Calif. – (March 10, 2011) – Ocean Mist Farms launched a new mobile version (m.oceanmist.com) of its website on March 1.
A mobile site is a mobile-device friendly version of a full website. The Ocean Mist Farms mobile site contains content similar to its full website, www.oceanmist.com, such as videos about cooking and preparing artichokes, a recipe database, an ask the chef function, and links to Ocean Mist Farms’ social media sites on You Tube, Facebook, and Twitter.
“Our overall strategy with the new mobile site is to be able to reach consumers by their preferred device of communication,” said Kori Tuggle, director of marketing and business development. “Whether it is a desktop PC, an iPad, iPhone, or Android, we are poised to cater to artichoke consumers on any device.”
The mobile site will also allow Ocean Mist Farms to execute QR code promotions and make instant in-store connections with artichoke shoppers.
“Our goals with the new mobile site are to remain relevant and engaged with our target audience, to provide value to the user, educate artichoke users, and support retail sales,” Tuggle said.
According to Morgan Stanley Research, in Q4 2010 Smartphones and Tablets combined outsold desktop PCs.
“With mobile platforms having reached critical mass, this is one of several mobile trends that we are acting upon,” Tuggle said.

“We put a lot of effort into creating cooking videos and digital cookbooks to enhance the experience of visitors to our Web site and give them more than what they were expecting with a traditional recipe search online,” said Kori Tuggle, director of marketing and business development. “From the traffic trends we discover online, we modify our site content to cater to what people are looking for.”
The online publication has virtual pages that can be turned by clicking the mouse or the clicking the navigation bar. The cookbook can also be searched inside for words, figures and full sentences, printed, or saved as a PDF file, and shared with friends electronically.
“We know slow cooking is top of mind during the winter months,” Tuggle said. “Our online recipe database is a resource being used by both consumers and our retail partners.”
For example, a California-based supermarket chain, Save Mart, promoted Ocean Mist Farms crock-pot artichokes recipe recently in the chains weekly circular.
“We’re using all forms of digital communication, from our website to social media, to help make cooking artichokes easier and more fun,” Tuggle said.
Ocean Mist receives a monthly average of 30,000 unique visitors a month to its website, with more than 50 percent of the visitors coming to the site specifically for artichoke recipes based on the volume of website pages viewed.
