Our Commitment to Sustainability

Sustainability is a hot topic right now as we all become more conscious of our own environmental impact and seek out more "green" options. This movement has also increased transparency from companies as they share how they are doing their part to preserve our natural resources. In my time working for Ocean Mist Farms, I have gained a deep appreciation for all that goes into creating sustainable farming practices, and I'm proud to share our commitment to sustainability with you.

Sustainable farming practices have been a top priority since Ocean Mist Farms set roots in Castroville, CA nearly 100 years ago. We have since become the largest artichoke grower in the country, but our commitment to stewarding our land has remained unwavering. Here is a look at some key ways we are paving the path of environmental stewardship:

Recycled Water

  • 90% of the company’s operations are drip irrigation (which is 70%+ more efficient than sprinkler irrigation), reducing not only raw water usage, but also reducing electrical and labor needs, collectively resulting in greater production efficiency.

  • 12,000 acre-feet of water are generated per year by recycling projects in Monterey County – 8,100 acre-feet of which is used by Ocean Mist Farms.

  • Ocean Mist Farms’ water is treated in a local water shed, which decreases water run-off and stops seawater intrusion – a huge responsibility for the brand, especially since we are located so close to the ocean in Castroville.

California Wetland Restoration

Ocean Mist Farms donated a 30-acre parcel adjacent to its fields to the Elkhorn Slough Foundation (ESF) in addition to a $10,000 donation to the foundation 10 years ago, which has aided in restoring and protecting land that would have otherwise been dry, dusty, and hard to farm. Now, the land is used for wildlife conservation, water percolation, and education.
