After a refreshing Labor Day Weekend, I am happily welcoming the start of what I like to call Sweet September with all the promises of the fall season to come. College football has officially kicked off, the pumpkin coffee drinks are back on the menus, and now we're just waiting for the cooler temperatures.

An unlikely name for a delectable dessert, the addition of fennel and artichoke flavors the yellow cake base in a memorable way. If you've never had an olive oil cake, it may sound like an odd oil to bake with, but this Italian staple results in a tender, moist crumb second to none.
