The Farm Equipment Mechanic is responsible for maintaining and repairing farm equipment such as tractors, harvesters and pumps. This position will work in our Castroville office and report to the Tractor Shop Supervisor.

Scope of Role

  • Repairs wheel tractors, crawler tractors, harvesters, tillage equipment, pumps and other machinery as needed;
  • Provides and utilizes all hand tools commonly needed to perform repairs on above equipment;
  • Uses shop tools and test instruments as needed;
  • Cleans, services and lubricates machinery;
  • Adjusts systems and controls;
  • Confers with tractor shop manager and machine owner or operator concerning machine problems, repairs needed, and extent of repairs to be performed;
  • Diagnoses systems for cause of failure or potential failure;
  • Disassembles components and inspects parts;
  • Orders parts through use of parts books, CDs, internet websites and parts department;
  • Completes parts request forms;
  • Reassembles components and tests machine operation;
  • Will do extensive configuration of hydraulic and electrical systems where new systems or modifications to existing systems are required;
  • Drive service trucks to repair sites in the field;
  • Maintains assigned service truck and equipment;
  • Complete time cards using the correct work order number, machine and task codes;
  • Complete work order forms by writing a concise description of repairs and recording the hours or miles on the machine. Notes any incomplete repairs or any other relevant observations.

Job Requirements and Qualifications

  • A minimum 5 years experience working as a mechanic or experience and equivalent training is required;
  • Proven experience in setting up and diagnosing malfunctions in hydraulic systems, electrical systems, drive systems and diesel and gas engines is required.
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License;
  • Ability to communicate in English and Spanish at a fluent level is highly desired;
  • Have ability to use specialty tools and scanners to diagnose, adjust and repair equipment; diagnose and repair malfunctions on field equipment, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems;
  • Disassemble and assemble farm equipment without assistance;
  • Inspect parts and determine when parts are to be replaced or reused;
  • Configure, layout and assemble complex hydraulic, electrical systems on new equipment;
  • Repair equipment quickly and accurately;
  • Produce quality work while maintaining cost controls;
  • Establish and maintain an organized, clean work area;
  • Have the willingness and ability to follow safety guidelines and work safely around and with equipment and other personnel.
