The Food Safety Supervisor works under the direction of the Field Operations Manager.  This position is responsible for designing, developing and leading the implementation of the systems for measuring and managing conformity to Agricultural Practices (GAP), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement (LGMA), National Organic Program (NOP), Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)/EPA and other established regulatory, industry and proprietary standards in all regions of the company’s operations including the Salinas Valley, Huron, Coachella and Yuma Arizona.

* Travel and seasonal relocation to areas such as Castroville, CA; Coachella, CA; Huron, CA and Yuma, Arizona is required. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Monitor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for food, third party and internal audit scores for food and sanitation and assure consistency of test outcomes for equipment and activity in those areas.
  • Conduct incident and root cause investigations and recommend methods for recurrence prevention. Present hazard reduction strategies to the Food Safety Committee and monitor implemented corrections for successfulness with deficiencies.
  • Lead and set goals and objectives for Valley Pride’s food safety programs throughout the organization including developing appropriate metrics, signage and monitoring methods to enforce compliance.
  • Adhere to GMP, GAP, LGMA, NOP, FSMA, EPA, OSHA and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) and all other applicable regulatory standards for food safety as minimum standards in the field and facilities.
  • Develop and implement policies and programs that provide guidance and education on food safety, food defense from IIPPs and HIPPs. Develop standard operating procedures (SOPs) for food safety/defense.
  • Embed food safety policies in practices, processes and automation to ensure consistent safe outcomes and compliance at all levels.
  • Enforce policies related to food safety internal and external auditing and proactive regular inspections.
  • Coordinate and oversee third-party audits as well as reviewing and conducting facility and field risk assessments, inspections and internal audits to ensure compliance with regulatory and company policies and procedures.
  •  Promote Valley Pride, Inc. programs by educating all stakeholders.
  • Verify the proper function, calibration and accuracy of all food monitoring equipment and methods including PH testing and chlorine dilution testing. Document all test results and responses to demonstrate continuous compliance.
  • Accurately document test results as well as recommending and implementing mitigation strategies with stakeholders for “out-of-compliance” conditions.
  • Lead Workplace Food Safety Committee and assist in troubleshooting food safety programs.
  • Develop, implement and adopt food safety training models, presentations, schedules and materials.
  • Manage all aspects of food safety training including content, programs and document control strategies.
  • Communicate analytical information in proper formats as directed/required to affected departments.
  • Review inventories of chemicals, pesticides, first aid kits for expiration dates and counts and update SDS sheets while working with the Safety Department and or assigned Safety Representative where appropriate.
  • Coordinate and collect environmental swabs for harvest machines and sanitation activities as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological or food science preferred. Will consider other degree with comparable experience in food/industrial safety. Will also consider relevant years of experience in lieu of educational requirements.
  • HACCP, FSMA PCQI, FSMCE, SFQA certification or combination a plus.
  • Three to five plus years’ experience in food safety/food quality assurance. Experience in industrial safety a plus.
  • Two years of supervisory experience.
  • Bilingual and biliterate in Spanish and English.
  • Advance math skills are required.
  • Computer literacy and familiarity with MS Office including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint are required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential. Must have ability to speak in large group settings to employees, customers and vendors.
  • Must be well-organized, detail-oriented and self-motivated.
  • Must have positive, proactive and problem-solving attitude.
