HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGER - VALLEY PRIDE, SALINAS, CA

Reporting to the General Manager, the Human Resources Manager serves as a proactive business partner to the management team.  This position is responsible for managing the planning, further development, implementation and administration of employment policies and human resources activities of Valley Pride, Inc.  The Human Resources Manager leads and makes recommendations on all labor and employee relation activities: benefits, training and development, recruitment, onboarding, leaves of absences, strategic planning, and ensures compliance with all federal and state laws.    

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Guide, train and advise management on employee rights and employer responsibilities to promote positive employee relations.
  • Conduct, document, and make recommendations relating to personnel investigations including allegations of harassment, discrimination, injuries, etc.
  • Inform leadership on impending changes in HR law and makes recommendations to ensure compliance.
  • Ensure compliance with, all California and federal laws and consults with management of any changes in those laws that may affect Valley Pride Inc.
  • Ensure compliance with laws, state or federal, pertaining to farm labor contractors, and provides any necessary assistance to comply.
  • Lead person on matters involving OSHA, EEOC, Federal immigration agencies, the US Department of Labor and any other regulatory agency.
  • Manage recruitment efforts, document hiring, onboarding, training, and development of employees including data tracking.
  • Oversee H2A program by searching, selecting, and keeping a pool of qualified individuals; managing logistics of employee recruiting, transportation and housing accommodations timely and efficiently.
  • Responsible for understanding critical business issues as it relates to human resources and developing sound recommendations that result in the effective management of the people, assets of the organization.
  • Oversee the farm labor vehicle driver training program as well as the maintenance of DOT files and related records.
  • Assure legal compliance with and documentation of PFL, FMLA, and other leave types, conducting routine audits.
  • Coordinate with Legal counsel regarding employment law issues.
  • Collaborate with Safety Manager on key workers compensation issues and safety training programs
  • In close partnership with OMF WC manager, provides leadership and direction regarding accident and injury investigation.
  • Coordinate light duty work with employee, supervisor, and physician and WC carrier.
  • Conduct comprehensive loss and claims management and analysis; follow up with all internal/external parties involved to expedite claims to closure.

Job Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in HR, business administration, or related field preferred
  • PHRca certification preferred
  • 7+ years’ experience in human resources, preferably in an agricultural environment (harvesting and field operations)
  • 5+ years leadership experience managing a team of HR professionals
  • Knowledgeable of California and Arizona wage and hour laws, as well as federal and state employee rights statues and employer responsibilities including the National Labor Relations Act and the California Agricultural Labor Relations Act
  • English/Spanish bi-lingual and biliterate with prior experience working in a bi-cultural environment
  • Ability to travel up to 30% to Valley Pride locations in Salinas Valley, Coachella, Yuma, and Huron, with travel heavily focused in the winter months
  • Valid class C California driver’s license
  • Ability to work Monday-Friday and Saturday’s as needed
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other computer software programs as needed
  • Must be able to work independently, prioritize responsibilities, and meet deadlines
