PAYROLL SPECIALIST - VALLEY PRIDE, SALINAS, CA

The Payroll Specialist is responsible for generating payroll checks primarily for field harvesting operations utilizing our Famous software system. The ideal candidate is bilingual; with the ability to communicate, read & write in English / Spanish proficiently. The qualified candidate will be an effective advocate and, at all times, maintain a professional image that supports Valley Pride Inc. values, image and goals. In addition, the incumbent is expected to provide excellent customer service to employees of all levels of the organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Piece Rate and Hourly payroll for field commodities (Truck Drivers / Foremen / Additional Commodity to be determined)
  • Calculate and prepare timesheets and spreadsheets for numerous field harvesting commodities.
  • Generate manual checks as needed.
  • Update and print crew timesheets weekly and as needed
  • Payroll Balance & Payment Calculations
  • Responsible in preparing, assembling, and sorting field payroll checks by area for distribution.
  • Update and maintain employee master file in Famous software.
  • Process (PSL) sick pay requests within internal and legal guidelines.
  • Calculate and input incentives at end of each season.
  • Process seasonal layoffs, resignations, and terminations; maintain voided and check replacements (i.e., stop payments and maintain spreadsheet).
  • Responsible in assisting employees, foremen, and supervisors with payroll questions.
  • Responsible for employee registration; distribution of W-2’s; telephone, employees and customers.
  • Prepare and save payroll journals by area and file signature sheets.
  • Prepare and send EFTPS spreadsheet to accounts payable for tax and garnishment payments
  • Produce various reports for upper management (i.e., weekly payroll cost report, efficiency reports, Crew Reports).
  • Assist other Payroll Clerks on P/R functions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements and Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required; college level accounting and business courses are highly desired; continuing education in accounting and other job-related areas may be required.
  • Minimum 3 – 5 years of payroll & accounting experience preferred. Prior experience with piece-rate calculations is highly desired.
  • Ability to communicate in English & Spanish at a fluent level is highly desired.
  • Working knowledge of computers and software as utilized in the agriculture environment such as Famous is highly desired.
  • Ability to work proficiently with Microsoft Excel, working with complex formulas.
  • Ability to use telephone, computer keyboard, photocopy machine, fax and other office equipment, including ability to utilize a 10-key calculator by touch. 
  • Discreet handling of all business and employee matters (maintaining confidentiality at all levels is a must); excellent interpersonal skills and strong communication skills; able to work well under pressure and meet various deadlines; must be extremely well organized and able to multitask;
