Leeks are a sweet, subtle-flavored member of the onion family, whose appearance is similar to green onions— but larger and stalky. After thoroughly washed, the white parts of a leek stalk can be enjoyed raw in salads or both the white and light green parts can be cooked to perfection in soups, stews, and other slow-simmer recipes. Leeks add an incredible, distinguished flavor profile placed in high regard.

  • Good source of vitamins A, C and K.
  • Choose firm, crisp stalks with solid white and light green coloring
  • Avoid withered, soft stalks with yellow-tops
  • Wrap in plastic when storing in refrigerator as leeks give off odor that other foods can absorb
  • Do not trim or wash raw leeks before storing
  • Leeks last in the refrigerator between 1-2 weeks depending on freshness at time of store purchase
  • Refrigerate any cooked leeks in airtight container and consume within 2 days
