OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY MANAGER - CASTROVILLE, CA

The Occupational Health & Safety Manager is responsible for the successful management of all duties associated with Occupational Safety and Workers' Compensation Programs of Ocean Mist Farms. This position will also provide support to our affiliate partner Desert Mist Farms.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Occupational Safety

  • Effectively develop and manage employee safety programs. This includes responsibility for safety training, procedural development, and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations (i.e. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Department of Transportation (DOT)
  • Promote a culture of safety awareness and accountability through ongoing employee communication, recognition, training, and engagement
  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments to identify and evaluate hazards and maintain control measures to mitigate identified risks, including engineering controls, administrative controls, and personnel protective equipment
  • Review and manage internal safety inspections and safety audits of different working locations, equipment, and processes to ensure proper follow up of corrective actions to resolution
  • Facilitate Safety Board meetings and develop and maintain related policies and procedures
  • Conduct investigations and due diligence for work-related accidents, workers' compensation claims and liability claims
  • Maintain Safety Management System (SMS) by recording all accident reports in a complete and timely manner
  • Manage all activity related to workers' compensation claims
  • Effectively manage Post Injury Program, including interactive process with injured workers to facilitate the appropriate and effective handling of their claim
  • Regularly prepare injury and illness reports and loss trends analysis for all departments and provide dashboard reports as requested
  • Lead governmental inspections, independent safety audits or facility visits
  • Prepare OSHA Form 301; maintain and post annual summary of OSHA Form 300 and 300A
  • Administer all first-aid claims, track near miss incidents, and manage auto, liability and subrogation claims
  • Coordinate and facilitate bi-annual claims reviews as well as participate in the Terra Safety Sub-Committee
  • Collaborate and work closely with external consultants on safety compliance programs related to Process Safety Management and Risk Management Plan (PSM and RMP)
  • Develop and maintain successful partnerships with third party administrators, claim adjusters, defense counsel, various insurance vendors and medical community
  • Train, motivate, and supervise Safety Specialist
  • Effectively manage safety resources and budget
  • Other duties as assigned
Job Requirements and Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health & safety, Human Resources, or related field required
  • 7+ years’ experience with health and safety programs including relevant experience in the agricultural industry
  • Bilingual fluency in English/Spanish is required. This includes reading, writing and communicating clearly and concisely
  • Moderate knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
  • Self-motivated and ability to work with limited supervision; must be able to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Effectively collaborate and communicate across several cross functional teams (Harvesting, Farming, Cooling, Value-Added, Administration) as well as with third-party claims administrators and company legal counsel
  • Ability to work with and manage a high level of detailed and confidential information; ability to identify and resolve complex problems
  • Excellent presentation, analytical, and decision-making skills; resourceful, well organized, and flexible.
  • Willingness to travel to our Coachella facility
  • Be responsive to nights and weekends if necessary to promptly address any safety concerns or emergencies
  • Valid class “C” California Driver’s license is required and must be insurable
