The family farmers of Ocean Mist Farms, the largest grower of artichokes in North America, have been growing artichokes for more than 90 years in Castroville, California (The Artichoke Capital). However, it has only been the last 25 years that they have been growing a special proprietary Globe shaped artichoke variety that is grown from seed.
The Variety Development of Globe Artichokes Grown by Seed
The Heirloom artichoke is the “original” variety of artichoke brought to California in the early 1900’s by Italian immigrants and grows from rootstock. It is the variety the U.S. fresh artichoke industry was built upon. Until about the 1990’s, it was the only variety being commercially grown. Click here to learn more about the Heirloom variety.
Heirloom-perennial plants are a seasonal, spring artichoke variety and do not produce a large volume to meet demand 12 months a year. In the late 1980′s, to accommodate customer requests for a year round supply of quality fresh artichokes, the growers of Ocean Mist Farms began to develop new artichoke varieties that grow from seed in all of our different growing areas. Today, we are able to grow quality artichokes 12 months of the year in four different growing regions of California and Baja Mexico.
What is different about the Globe Artichoke variety grown by seed?
Our Globe artichoke varieties have been developed to mimic the characteristics of the Heirloom variety and grow in the multiple micro-climates that we farm in. Size, shape, texture and color have all been bred into our proprietary seed that produces large, meaty, thorned Globe artichokes year around. At Ocean Mist Farms we believe that an artichoke with thorns is synonymous with a fuller, more edible heart and intense flavor.
